The thread

A thread is the history of posts on a topic. Everything that happens within it appears there as a post: written messages as well as proposals, questions, tasks, files and decisions.

This means that each topic has a single timeline. Anyone returning after a week can read from top to bottom to see what has happened – and doesn’t have to cross-reference four different sections.

Writing

Type in the composer below. A slash opens the Commands; this allows you to create a decision, a question, a task or a file without interrupting your flow of writing.

Rhizome summarises several similar posts in quick succession so that the thread isn’t flooded by a single person.

!!! Note: "Edited posts" Anyone who edits a post at a later date leaves a mark: the post is labelled (edited) and the time of the edit is shown. The history should remain traceable, even if someone is simply correcting a typo.

Replying and quoting

You can reply to an individual post. The reference remains visible and specifies what you are referring to – the proposal, the question, the task, the file or the decision. If the post has since been deleted, this is indicated there, rather than the reply being left hanging in the void.

Selected text can be quoted, either from the thread or from the document. A maximum of three quotes at any one time – after that, you’ll need to remove one before adding another.

Respond

You can react to any post with an emoji. This replaces the many brief ‘likes’ that would otherwise make a thread unreadable.

Select text

If you highlight text from your own or other users’ posts, a menu will appear offering four options: reply to it, quote the text in the document, or turn it into a task or a proposal. What started out as a subordinate clause is thus assigned to someone or ends up on the list of proposals without anyone having to type it out.

It also works the other way round: selected text in the document can be quoted in the thread.

When a thread is closed

A solved or archived] thread no longer accepts new posts. Instead, the thread’s conclusion appears at the bottom. Anyone who still wishes to comment should reopen the thread.
